Before the Renovation
a derelict building
Initial State
After twenty-five years of abandonment, the church was in an advanced state of disrepair. Water was infiltrating from several points, the stones were saturated with moisture, and numerous pigeons had made their home in the framework. The stained glass windows had disappeared, replaced by concrete blocks, and the interior was cluttered with various objects accumulated over the years.
Four Structural Errors Identified
The building suffered from four major defects that I identified and corrected:
- Walls covered with cement: Unlike traditional lime plasters, cement trapped moisture in the walls. I removed these unsuitable coatings to allow the stones to breathe again.
- Undersized bell tower louvers: Too small, they allowed water to infiltrate the bell tower during strong winds or storms. I designed and installed a more effective system.
- Gutters too narrow: The rainwater drainage system was completely inadequate. I installed wider gutters and water channels to solve this problem.
- Deteriorated roof: I also replaced 4,000 damaged tiles to ensure complete waterproofing of the roof.
These interventions have preserved the structural integrity of the building and ensured its durability for years to come.
